Michael Brown, filmmaker

Director Michael Brown, whose film Farther Than the Eye Can See about Weihenmayer’s 2001 expedition garnered 19 film festival awards and 2 Emmy nominations, accompanies the team along with an elite Serac Adventure Films production team to ensure the story is told and shared. Brown is a five-time Everest summiter, with over 50 lm festival awards including 3 Emmys in 5 nominations, whose client list includes National Geographic, Discovery Channel, and BBC to name a few. Cameras capture the incredible and dramatic beauty of the Himalaya; the dangers, challenges, and risks that the soldiers overcome; the touching relationships formed; the joy, the laughter, and the tears that accompany such an awe-inspiring adventure.

Erik Weihenmayer

Erik Weihenmayer, blind adventurer

The expedition team includes blind climber Erik Weihenmayer, whose historic ascent of Mt. Everest was named one of 2001’s Greatest Sporting Achievements by Time magazine. Erik’s ability to overcome adversity has led him to be an inspirational force for clients such as Google, Bank of America, Proctor and Gamble, American Express and Pepsi. His ability to motivate now serves as high-altitude fuel for the veterans to find their edges, push their limits, and rediscover the fullness of life after war. Joined by ten members of the team of mountain guides who accompanied Erik on his original Everest climb, the soldiers push beyond their wounds, finding courage and strength not just in themselves but from the relationships of those with them who say “Dare to do it!”

“Our 2001 Everest climb transformed the lives of my team and me,” reflected Weihenmayer. “A few months later, 9-11 struck, radically affecting our men and women in uniform. My Everest team and I decided that there would be no more fitting way to celebrate our tenth anniversary than to provide an example for the many soldiers who were injured in their service to our country by leading a team of injured veterans on a similar journey.”
