The Shoot Outª Boulder

"Altered Dates"

Read on for a way to see our film.  And remember, ManiaTV.com Rocks!

On the weekend of October 15 and 16th we participated in The Shoot Outª Boulder 24 hour film festival. Our team consisted of Timmy O'Neill, Morning Glory Farr, Ryan Ross, Sally Berg, Elias Bachmann, David D'Angelo and Michael Brown. We had to make our film in under 24 hours without the use of editing machines (all in camera, in order) and include 5 of eleven landmarks objects and the phrase "You are a good man Charlie Brown!" in a short film. On Sunday night the top ten films played for a packed house at the Boulder Theater. Our film "Altered Dates" was in the Top Ten and Timmy was awarded 'Best Actor' and Michael was awarded 'Best Cinematography and In-Camera Editing'. The whole team cast and crew made it happen. Dave was the producer while everyone shared in the writing (dreaming up lines) and directing, especially Timmy who was always able to find a way to make a scene funny.

The contest started at 9:00 pm on Friday night where we were handed a 'THE BRIEF' with the eleven landmarks or props, five of which, had to show up in our film. We had met once two nights before to come up with our concept, a comedy love story.

Special thanks to Michael Conti for bringing the Shoot Out to Boulder.

The film opens with Jane (Sally Berg) checking Craig's List for dates. Her alter ego (Morning Glory Farr) pops in and encourages her to find them a man. The computer screen background is a picture of first of the landmarks, the clock tower on the Boulder Court House. Next to the computer is the second item, an orange pumpkin.

The next scene is where alter ego (Timmy O'Neill) appears in the mirror as Sheldon (Elias Bachmann) prepares for the big date. A third item The Shoot Out Boulder poster, showes up next to the mirror.

Saturday morning we started early shooting the scenes where the couple(s) get to their date. Here we include the fourth landmark, a sign for a local business.

As they drive Jane's alter ego fights with her over the radio selection as she dances in the mirror. Ryan Ross and Timmy O'Neill rode in the back seat providing the alternating sound tracks of BBC World News and rap Music. Michael Brown sat in the middle with the camera trying to keep Morning Glory framed in the mirror.

Jane arrives at the date (at the Boulder Med Restaurant) as the 'imaginary' Sheldon alter ego leers at her in a hilarious climax.

After the Annoying Waiter (Ryan Ross) points out a 'Bat in the Cave' Sheldon gets caught by Jane looking at his reflection in a spoon.

As the date progresses Sheldon takes hints from his alter ego to get Jane drunk so that he can "Get a piece of that!".

Just as the couple starts to get close and Sheldon is putting a blueberry in Jane's mouth the annoying waiter arrives with the check and a doggie bag.

The date does not go so well and the frustrated Sheldon tries to ditch his alter ego. Timmy rollerblades after him begging him to keep him with the phrase "You're a good man Charlie Brown!" for the fifth item in the brief. For the exciting conclusion of this six minute film, you'll just have to download ...

This version is slightly modified from the original. We cleaned up some transitions and audio  with Final Cut Pro.

The download is free and we are trying an experiment. If you love the movie then make a contribution to the future of our team's filmmaking. Making movies is an expensive habit and we would like it to be sustainable, networks have commercials, HBO makes you pay and Netflix requires a subscription. There is an emerging market for downloadable internet movies that we are entering. We spent about $500 including the entry fee, late night pizza and a pair of rollerblades to make this film. And, hey, if you send more than $10 we'll hand write a post card.

Disclaimer: Crude 'Timmy' style humor and rough 'shoot out style' in camera editing, bad acting and sloppy shots. Still, this was one of the best films in a great event!

You may enter any amount you choose from $0.10 to $500.00 in the amount box. Thanks!

It is optional to contribute and we would love to hear from you either way and let us know what you think and suggestions for next year's Shoot Out. bouldershootout@seracfilms.com

Dave and Michael timing out an edit. This proved the most difficult part as the camera would not go to an exact frame after reviewing a shot.
